Coaches: take the uncontrollables and extreme language and shift them: Turn the word 'win' into 'compete' Turn the word 'outcome' into 'process' Turn the word 'must' into 'would like' Turn the word 'disaster' into 'disappointed' Engage in a psychologically informed environment!

the biggest compliment I could ever give the TOVO Institute and the impact it has made in our program is a quote from one of our players “I thought I could always see the space on the soccer field but now I am seeing and understanding how to EFFECT the space”! Todd Beane #TOVO

METRICS MATTER: When coaches want to control merely one metric of winning, we tend to choose players who help now (i.e. physical advantage). When we add a metric of intelligent play, we open the door to all players. Try to win intelligently and you develop a Xavi. #TOVO

POV: If we view the game as a series of technical actions, we will attribute most errors to technical deficiency when in fact poor perception or position play may be the underlying issue. Consider the bias we bring to player assessments. #TOVO

Champions are: - Curious: they have an inquisitive mind - Nosy: they watch their rivals closely and steal quietly - Accepting: they know bad days don't define them - Patient: they sculpt skill over years not days - Process-driven: they focus on controllables with intensity

A LEGEND’S WISDOM: The accomplished footballer “must possess football intelligence, insight in the game, and recognize the ever-changing situation. He must be able to choose very quickly the most team efficient solution out of the many possible solutions.” (Rinus Michels) #TOVO

How do we create environments where people can do their best work? Can’t wait to dive into this over the holidays! #whatdriveswinning

COACH NOTES: It’s not that there aren’t 10+ “Coaching Points” you could make at any moment. You could, but don’t. Children do not learn that way. I’ve been there, done that, and ditched it. Consider silence a platform for observation. #TOVO

Coaches: do you warm up the attention of your players. How? -ask players to start with a visualization task - "What does a great session look like today?" -then make your 1st activity fun -incorporate scanning into that fun activity -make sure communication is involved

COACH CONFESSIONS: Made a big shift in my journey into competitive football when I realized my primary role in a match is not to be a cheerleader, but to be an analyst. Find a simple solution to make the 2nd half better than the first. #TOVO

Things that make me happy! Even if it doesn’t happen, I am grateful that CHSAA is taking the time to at least think about the athletes who lost a complete season.

In team invasion sports like soccer and basketball: Learning the game is mediated by understanding the logic of the game. In these sports, logic includes understanding that the relationship between players, space, and ball is fundamental to decision-making and action-selection
