Breaking News! Well humanity, we did it, even if just for one day. Yesterday, Nov. 18, was the first time in recorded history that the global 2m surface temperature breached 2.0°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC baseline. The long-term average remains below 1.5°C. But not for long.

Halt the Logging - Save the Kangaroo Island Koalas - Sign the Petition! chng.it/m4kLvpRm via Change.org Australia The world watched in 2019-20 as rescuers raced to save KI koalas from burn injuries. Now logging is decimating the bushfire survivors! Shame!

As crazy as it may sound, Global sea surface temperatures have now been at all-time record warm levels for an entire year. This is perhaps one of the most absurd and alarming graphs I have ever plotted.

For 5 or 6 hours people drove around this eastern grey kangaroo without stopping to check her pouch. Her joey’s chance of survival reduces quickly without warmth and milk. Please stop to check. A pair of gloves and a pillow case is all that’s needed.

In December 2023, this reef in the northern Great Barrier Reef was 100% coral cover. In March 2024, after ~6 weeks of prolonged heat stress, coral bleaching was extensive and mortality underway, with 80% bleached and 20% recently dead colonies.

I’ll be heading to Heron for a field trip in a month and now expecting it to be a devastating trip. This bleaching event is widespread and significant and with a local media and government largely ignoring whats happened I appreciate Terry Hughes’s honesty and tenacity 🙏.

Merelava island. One of the remotest communities in Vanuatu. Locals build homes and gardens dug into the steep slopes of the dormant volcano. Tricky sea landings and any approach is timed with the swells. They have not had a trained health worker posted here for the last 6 years.

In 2022 we showed from WA Government records that their prescribed burning program was creating a more fire-prone landscape. They dismissed the findings, but their reasons turned out to massively *strengthen* our conclusions (new paper here). iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108… 1/🧵

Last month NOAA confirmed that the world’s fourth global coral bleaching event on record was underway. See how the current event (which began last year) compares to the previous three events in terms of extent and severity. Read more: climate.gov/news-features/…
