Day 27 - inside. Keir memorial designed by Robert Rowand Anderson. Lots of Stirlings were buried in this section of the nave, both pre and post reformation. A rather fabulous piece of Scottish Baroque! Dunblane Cathedral. #31DaysOfGraves Historic Scotland #cathedral

Day 27 of #31DaysOfGraves - Inside Most graves of fallen soldiers during World War One were marked with temporary wooden memorials, then replaced after the war by the stone markers of the Commonwealth War Graves. Some of those original memorials were sent home to the families of the fallen (1/3)

Day 28 of #31DaysOfGraves is 'died elsewhere'. The grave of brothers Jack & James Turnbull from Cathcart Cemetery has an angel holding a cross. Jack died in France of wounds received during #WW1 in 1918, while his older brother James died in 1921 of an illness contracted there

#31DaysOfGraves Day 28: Died elsewhere. “Far, far from Scotland of the mist and storm”. In the British cemetery in Funchal, Madeira, lie Scots, from Alloa, Kilmarnock, Edinburgh and Auchterarder, who died far from home. Photos from 2016. Quote from Neil Munro-To Exiles.

Day 29 of #31DaysOfGraves is #old I'm thinking it will be impossible to find older examples of a headstone or hogback anywhere else in, or near Glasgow apart from The Govan Stones at the old parish Church. Go visit this week before they close! thegovanstones.org.uk

One of the medieval grave-slabs now incorporated into the outer walls of the parish kirk in Strachur Argyllshire. Date uncertain, but the style is said to suggest 13/14c. #31DaysOfGraves Day 29 Old

Today's the feast day of St Kennara, a 4thC female hermit reputed to have lived in Galloway before travelling to Rhineland where she may've been martyred as a follower of St Ursula. A monastic site was likely raised on her hermitage at Kirkinner, where the 1828 church sits (1/3)

#31DaysOfGraves Day 29 - Old This Pictish symbol stone was discovered in 1880, incorporated into St Clement's Parish Church in Dingwall as a lintel above a doorway. It now stands in the churchyard.

Day 29 of #31DaysOfGraves - Old This is the beautiful 11th century, Viking-era "Hogback" stone located in Luss Kirkyard in Argyll It was carved to look like a building, with shingles on the roof and rows of arcaded arches on either side. A truly remarkable piece of medieval art

#31DaysofGraves Day 30: Scrollwork. Hand holding scroll on gravestone of Gabriel Finlay, in Buchanan churchyard, Stirlingshire. He was a joiner, born in Greenock and died of Diabetes Mellitis at Balmaha. His wife Lucy and their infant granddaughter are also remembered.

Day 30, scroll work, Finlayson mural in the nave at Dunblane Cathedral. Isabella was the last person buried here before the restoration. Robert Rowand Anderson had a hand in this design. #31daysofgraves Historic Scotland #cathedral

Day 30 of #31DaysOfGraves - Scrollwork We were spoilt for choice again looking for today's image from a Scottish kirkyard. In the end we chose these wonderful graveslabs, packed with ornate carved scrollwork, from Kilmartin, Argyll. Note how they were reused in later centuries.

Day 31 of #31DaysOfGraves is Skull. This example is from St Cuthbert's Kirkyard, Edinburgh I dont know who this decorative stone is for due to algae/lichen/moss growth, something quite common in older graves. This could have ticked the damaged /colour / scrollwork days too!

It's the final day of #31DaysOfGraves and the theme is 'Skull'. I'll put forward this stone from Abercorn Kirkyard in West Lothian featuring not one, not two, but three skulls... #Halloween2024
