Last week our (recently graduated) MSc student Anneke Stam received the first prize of the Dutch Royal Water Network (KNW) thesis awards! In her thesis project, Anneke studied the effects of groundwater level changes on greenhouse gas emissions from Dutch peat pastures.

This morning one of our students found this 'Klimt' painting in a microscope slide of a plant root. Just an unexpected treasure when researching AMF fungi in root cells! Van Gogh Museum

Measuring soil organic carbon in bulk soils and organic matter fractions can be challenging when carbonates are also present. Our recently published paper (Koorneef, G., et al. 2023 Geoderma) evaluates 5 methods. authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S00…

In their paper 'The challenge of selecting an appropriate soil organic carbon simulation model' Garsia ea conclude that, to date, SOC simulation does'nt represent an adequate tool for globally ensuring effectiveness of SOC sequestr effort and ensuring reliable carbon crediting.

On February 2nd, Giulia run a Living Soil workshop session in Surinam. One of the activities was playing the educational Ludi Soli game. The game improves your knowledge of different cause-to-effect relationships in the soil system and how collective choices can influence them.

We expect shade to reduce plant biomass production, which will affect the supply of soil organic matter and thus soil life. We designed the panels to create light gradients that allow us to study the light-plant interaction. We also sowed mixtures of shade-tolerant plant species.
