Government working right up until Santa saddles up. There are a couple of chunky announcements today: - a package on energy efficiency and more money for heat pumps - confirmation that the UK will introduce a carbon border adjustment from 2027 These are both very welcome.

More announcements from the UK Government as the end of the year approaches. This time it’s the next stage of support for key carbon capture projects (it really does look like CCS will happen in the UK for doubters). Ruth Herbert summarises them here, with links in her thread.

The UK maintained a strong presence at COP28, within the negotiations and through the sectoral initiatives started during the presidency at COP26. As a developed country and a champion of international climate ambition, the COP28 agreement brings implications for the UK. 2/6

In June, the Committee noted a significant delivery gap to the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution of reducing emissions by 68% by 2030. The agreements made at COP28 require a sharper domestic response and time is now short for the gap to be bridged. 3/6
