1/4 #WSTC7 #ToolSesh1 To identify behaviour while at sea, researchers are increasingly using state-space models such Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) which classify states such as foraging, travelling and resting using the speed and turning angle of GPS-tracked birds.

2/4 #WSTC7 #ToolSesh1 While these models efficiently classify the behavior of species with discrete foraging & travelling areas, their classifications are often erroneous for species who forage on the go such as tropicbirds

3/4 #WSTC7 #ToolSesh1 To improve behavioural classification, we are measuring how the inclusion of wet/dry data from geos, accelerometry &/or TDR data increases the accuracy of HMMs and whether we can extrapolate this information onto a large GPS dataset of red-billed tropicbirds

4/4 #WSTC7 #ToolSesh1 Our study is still on its way, but our preliminary results suggest that even with a small wet-dry, TDR or accelerometer dataset, we can significantly improve the behavioral classification of these models. Stay tuned for our final results!
