So grateful to the team at The Globe and Mail for space to tell my sister's story in this way...illuminated by decades of letters written by midnight oil & our mother's unrelenting love. Hardest thing I've ever written but worth it if now you know her name. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…

Julie Neumann was shot 13 times and killed in front of her son by her estranged husband, Charles Schmidtke. Just ten days prior, Julie was denied a protective order against Charles. Julie was five months pregnant when she was murdered. A thread 🧵

Was assaulted today at Drive Test #Kitchener by a woman who kept spewing racist hate against "f$@king brown people" when asked to wait in line. When I told her this was not OK, she came up to my face to threaten me. That's when people (and I) started recording her. A thread...

With #patient & #caregiver stories HCPs can see with other eyes, think with other minds, feel with other hearts, as well as their own. Stories aren’t data but they strengthen data and provide meaning that can lead to new & better understanding of what brings your patient to you.

Today's World Family Doctor Day. These MDs are the *foundation* of healthcare. Beyond recognition, they need resources, remuneration, respect, & the influence on our system that befits their training & expertise. Much ❤️ to my FP friends & the FPs who care for my fam! #WFDD2023

I would argue most family doctors are working beyond their actual capacity, to try to make up for systemic failures. And it’s not working anymore.

Happy Pride Month from your favorite gay surgeon! Visibility is important. I can’t tell you the number of wonderful conversations I’ve had with my patients because I proudly wear my 🏳️‍🌈 pin to work daily. And I will fight to keep creating these safe spaces. Happy Pride!

People complain about long Wait times to get non-urgent appointments & long waits in the office. But what do you think we are doing? Caring for someone else who needs it.

Dear incoming interns: Remember that your attendings have been practicing medicine for years, while you're essentially getting a new job every 4 weeks. Know that your job is not to know everything. You job is to show up, ask questions, & care deeply for your patients.

Thank you Jennifer Kagan (forlittlekeira) for your endless advocacy. Kiera will never be forgotten. And so many women and children will hopefully get the justice and protection they deserve.
