I can’t help but giggle at how funny Middle Low German looks like next to Middle High German. I mean, sure it’s two dialects of a language continuity but don’t tell me you don’t find “De man is ok” funny!

Very sad to hear. The first linguist that informed the wider world about the existence of minority Tai scripts in parts of Vietnam and Laos, and still has provided some of the only existing documentation of these.

You can also do such historical diagrams on a broader, even global level! Here's a 1926 Japanese representation of world history ("Table of the rise and fall of the countries of the world" 世界各國興亡表). Such visualizations also tell a lot about how history is constructed...

I think there's maybe really something here, look at this. I got GPT to respond to the prompt from this uml.edu/docs/sample-es…. Then I got a sequence of embeddings for each word in both the human- and GPT- authored essays. You can see how the human one moves around more.

I've posted this already, but I'll post it again because it is so nice: 知之之之之道也, Classical Chinese for "knowledge is power" (= know it 知之, getting there 之之, is the path to 之道) 🤣 [Inspired by Gvd Gabelentz' Chinese Grammar, still a good read after 140+ years!]

At least two frequent Mandarin words have had their pronunciation changed to avoid sounding like 'f*ck': 1. 入 ('to enter') should be rì, but became rù; rì as f*ck is now written 日 (㒲) 2. 鳥 ('bird'), should be diǎo, but > niǎo (diǎo: male genital, Canto 'f*ck')

Incredible work by the Wells Fargo analyst who ordered the same burrito bowl 75 times at eight different Chipotles in NYC to prove the portion size inconsistency 🤣
