Lesson of the day for teaching English learners. SIMPLIFY. Too many teachers throw too much at their students all at one time and the students simply can't take it all in. Simplify and focus on one or two manageable chunks and then get students to take action.

Here is an emergent writer; where he often can only generate lists or phrases. To see him use academic vocabulary is a HUGE celebration! It's an obstacle for our ML/ELs to feel confident in speaking and writing about content. I'm so proud!๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโœ๏ธCicero District 99 WIDAโ„ข Dr. Nichole Gross

This is my favorite, most accessible definition of culturally responsive instruction. Here's how participants will interact w/ this slide: - share the definition - provide a sentence frame - ask Ts to summarize the definition using the sentence frame

This is how I scaffolded a lesson w/ my co-Ts: - looked at their document from last year - added an image to go w/ the text - added synonyms behind unfamiliar words Co-planning = to co-teaching

ELL BRAIN BREAK! ๐Ÿ˜ ๐ŸŽฒ Fun, quick reward games for ELL students to break up practicing content and keep things lively and engaging. These are particularly helpful when students can get out of their seats and move around a bit.

As an end-of-year project, 14 of my newcomers decided on writing an encouraging letter to a future newcomer student. I LOVE how each embedded their personal experiences as newcomers & provided amazing tips on how to navigate a new school, culture, and language. Happy reading โ€”

Translanguaging supports ELs in accessing academic content. Despite challenges from English-only policies, educators can promote this practice by creating intentional tasks that encourage students to draw on their linguistic strengths. Education Week bit.ly/4e6xXJr
