I'm so grateful for the 300+ signatures on the petition calling on WSJ to reinstate me, org'd by IAPE TNG/CWA 1096 & supported by the NewsGuild-CWA. Thank you. I hope WSJ will respond. The press is stronger when their reporters can join unions. The right to unionize is a basic human right.
Carol Ng is a former British Airways flight attendant and union leader in Hong Kong who decided to run for office as a pan-democrat to fight for workers’ rights. For this, the gov’t charged her with subversion. She’s now been in prison for 3.5 years with no sentence issued.
Words aren’t enough, Matthew Miller. Anything less than sanctions against responsible officials & judges sends the wrong message to Beijing. And these sanctions are *required* by the Hong Kong Human Rights & Democracy Act Sec. 7 (“The President *shall* impose the sanctions…”).
As suggested by Galileo Cheng (see his thread in next tweet in this thread), the likely to be fake suicide note appeared to have first gained currency through Falun Gong-related media. If that’s the case, it’s yet another example of FLG-related media having loose relationships
Former journalist and The Nobel Prize nominee Gwyneth Ho risks a longer sentence by choosing not to submit a mitigation plea in her national security case. Her courage and dedication to #HongKong democracy will not go unnoticed hongkongfp.com/2024/09/02/hon…
During Xi Jinping’s visit to San Francisco last year, CCP-affiliated groups violently attacked peaceful protesters throughout the city. Responses from the White House and US gov have been tepid, and no charges filed. Excellent report from Shibani Mahtani. washingtonpost.com/world/interact…
On this day last year, Hong Kong's top court partly sided with LGBTQ activist Jimmy Sham and gave the government two years to set up an alternative legal framework to recognise same-sex couples. The government told AFP News Agency this week it is "studying" and "formulating... details".🧵
