#bpsasm2025 Dr Cormac Ryan challenging traditional biomedical model of chronic pain. His PhD was in role of physical activity in managing pain. But society needs to be open to non-medical approaches - ie the biopsychosocial model. His public engagement helps understanding.

Pleased to share this blog from James Downar and me in BMJ Supportive and Palliative Care. We discuss and challenge some recent themes published on the subject of assisted dying. We argue that many of the ‘concerns’ apply as much to palliative care. blogs.bmj.com/spcare/2025/05…

Calm, measured article of how end of life care can go wrong. Even in the finest hospitals of the NHS. Yes it’s only one story but that doesn’t stop the constant use of ‘success’ anecdotes to promote ‘palliative care’ as the answer to assisted dying. Why can’t we work together?

Simon C Sam H Ahmedzai We all feel we have failed those we most love when we think about what they suffered in their dying. But I feel sure you did not fail your father. You carried on caring for him while doing the most demanding of professions.

If you want to know how sinister and complicit the western press is. Read and listen carefully to the reporting of the illegal ramming, boarding and kidnapping of the volunteers onboard the #FreedomFlotilla near #Gaza they were carrying humanitarian aid.

Feeling humbled to receive this honorary membership of The British Pain Society last week at its annual scientific meeting. I want to acknowledge the constant support and recognition I’ve had from the leadership, fellow members and especially the patient and carer group.

Agreed Helen M-B But who actually is asking for palliative care to be 'bypassed'? The two options - PC and AD - can coexist and ideally all patients who seek AD should have had access to PC first. But when some get PC, it may not suit their needs, or fails to deliver.

It's beyond time for change. Without those who didn't live to see this progress: Diane Pretty, Lord Joffe, Terry Pratchett, Debbie Purdy, Noel Conway, Diana Melly, Paola Marra, Ian Douglas, Alison Fenner, David Minns, Pippa Stone, Lisa Cook to name but a few, we would not be here
