Embrapa was founded in 1973, after policymakers concluded that the problem in Brazilian agriculture was a lack of useful knowledge. Imported advice from Iowa didn't help tropical farmers. So โ€“ despite Brazil's low income! โ€“ they decided to set up a frontier ag research institute.

If scientists wants science to be taken seriously, they've got to stop doing stupid stuff like publishing the zillionth study claiming that groupwise disparities are proof of bigotry, and then firing scientists who point out the obvious flaw in that reasoning.

I. Cox I used to be against the BM 100 for a mere reason; people believed it would replace the good ol' Yamaha T50 and Honda MD90. Then in a few years, I was impressed by all the things it could do. Now everyone is talking about operating Haojues through 2030 & I got livid again.

The Economist If not from exertion, where is a person supposed to draw fulfilment? POV: and it canโ€™t just be through hiking, or the triathlons, because you don't wake up, each time, with the urge to do it better...

Something thatโ€™s a little difficult about having teenage kids is that they come home expressing some moral or political idea thatโ€™s a bit crude or naive, and you have to decide whether or not to let it go or to complicate it a bit (1)
