Five days after the assault on the Capitol, it feels as if: We're underestimating the threat of further violence. Republicans aren't rejecting Trumpism root and branch. Conservatives aren't engaged in serious rethinking. Some Democrats lack a real sense of urgency. I am alarmed.

Some who are appalled by Trump’s insurgency are now warning that impeachment, disqualification for future office, or criminal indictment will make him a martyr to his followers. Wrong. Failure to hold him accountable will make him appear a hero.
