20 years ago tomorrow. And today 5 years since we lost former Secretary General Kofi Annan #WorldHumanitarianDay

A very emotional & appropriately somber ceremony. As Ahmad Fawzi aptly put it off the cuff: “we are family”. Indeed lots of grief and pain, but also love & camaraderie & a sense of purpose/belonging and hope for the young generations of those in pursuit of peace.

Today: a day of remembrance- UN Humanitarian colleagues asked survivors what Canal means to the world 20 years on. The answer is: not sure. History has sped up. But somehow that day bound us for life in the service of a UN we grew up to love & which we are still meant to serve

With EU in Syria

Can’t believe it took me so long to read William Dalrymple #fromtheholymountain as I am on my way back to the Holy Mountain (Mt Athos grandpaternal land) after 4 months in Damascus &upon return home to Saloniki via Beirut and Istanbul. So much felt so eerily timely even 30 years on.

I was honoured to call Kofi Annan a mentor and proud to call him a friend. As we mark six years since his passing, his legacy as a global champion for peace remains an inspiration in our lives and our work.
