Expertise isn't about having more working memory, it's about needing less of it. Experts automate many components in long-term memory and can recognise meaningful patterns instantly, bypassing the need to process individual elements. ⬇️ 🧵

Yes. Writing is not a second thing that happens after thinking. The act of writing is an act of thinking. Writing *is* thinking. Students, academics, and anyone else who outsources their writing to LLMs will find their screens full of words and their minds emptied of thought.

There's a commonly used method for causal inference that just doesn't work It's called Nonlinear Mendelian Randomization—NLMR—, and the hundreds of papers that have used it need to be investigated🧵 To grok the issue, answer: does something look off about this vitamin D result?

Psychologists & related fields: what is a big methods question that you believe remains somewhat unanswered & that you'd love to see adressed? There may be an opportunity for a large-scale meta-science project w many teams trying to figure out a question. Any thoughts welcome!

Expand the definition of death...so,,,harvesting organs from people who aren't quite dead yet aka "We need to kill more people to save more people". Don't these people hear themselves?

Psychologists have posited hundreds of cognitive biases over the years. A fascinating paper argues that they all boil down to one of a handful of fundamental beliefs coupled with confirmation bias. [Link below.]

You might remember having to buy a Sound Blaster to get decent audio on your PC. On the MSX, Konami just built the upgrade into the cartridge. The SCC added 5 extra channels for games like Gradius 2 and Metal Gear 2. faq.msxnet.org/scc.html

My favorite part of this study is where they show what really determines if growth mindset interventions work: Having a financial conflict of interest. Financially-conflicted authors found sizable, positive effects of interventions; authors without conflicts got worse results.

Interventions aimed at instilling a "growth mindset" in schoolchildren fizzle out completely without effect. The concept of Growth Mindset has gained widespread popularity over the past decade, prompting numerous organisations to offer Growth Mindset interventions.

Eens.

One of my favorite studies on the validity of psychological measures was a survey that included 15 commonly-used measures. Virtually all of them were found to be invalid for making comparisons between groups.

Psychology has a selection issue: "Students with poorer performance... transfer into psychology from majors that may be perceived as difficult, whereas higher-performing students appear to leave psychology for these same majors, which may also be perceived as more lucrative."

With new kittens in the house, I’ve been painfully reminded how much a Jew’s morning prayer attire, with all its strings and straps, doubles as a feline jungle gym.
