The 5 ditches outside East Gate of #Ardoch #Roman Fort north of Stirling, result of successive reductions in size of 4 forts: 1st Flavian (AD 80s) then up to 3 Antonine forts (AD 140/50s). Southern anchor of Gask Ridge Frontier. Is this the best site in #RomanScotland: 5 stars?

These beautiful, complete #Roman beakers were the grave goods of a young woman excavated in Southwark. She'd been buried in a coffin half a metre longer than the skeleton at the foot end, and these 3rd- to 4th-century pots had been placed in the space. #ArchaeologyAdvent #Day9

Finally finished! A speculative reconstruction of the 1st c. AD funerary altar of the child Julia Victorina. Beautiful Ionic decorative scheme, with very specific spring flowers. So specific that I think they must have been individually colored. #polychromy #Louvre 1/

Instructors at Oxford are working to increase access to the Classics. How? By treating Latin and Greek as languages to be spoken like any other. BijanOmrani has the story. Oxford Latinitas medium.com/in-medias-res/…

The arguments (and evidence, because there *is* some) for a crenellated walkway on #hadrianswall can found here: wp.me/pA90X-B6

Remembering that time back in 2007 that I carefully re-created Iron Age coins of the Iceni and Trinovantes as Christmas biscuits 🍪

The desolate and wildly beautiful Tomen y Mur in Snowdonia, north Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 would have been a much livelier place in the first century AD, complete with its own vicus, military parade grounds, and amphitheatre! #RomanFortThursday coflein.gov.uk/en/

If you’re wondering about that big lump in the background, that’s a Norman (11th century AD) motte. It was built into the existing Roman fort. It’s thought to be the site of Lleu Llaw Gyffes’ home in the Mabinogion 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
