Here's one for Mosaic Monday, a couple of happy dolphins next to a ship anchor. They look a lot less threatening than many dolphins seen in other Roman mosaics!

Note the pattern's slightly skewy! 😃 Unlikely they had the pattern etched/painted on the nucleus or setting bed. Really unusual as the other examples I've seen have all been pretty precise. 2nd photo at 7 o'clock there is possibly a repair but note the angles on the black shapes

Next Sunday I'll be doing a prize draw for a signed copy of my latest book.

From Pompeii, I wonder if the degradation of the surface of the black was a result of the heat or just that type of stone?

Notice the double and four strand border patterns appearing on here. Really useful to see these patterns from long before they appeared in mosaics.
