Another fantastic programme #Pompeii TheNewDig . So beautiful the way it really brings home the human tragedy of it, alternating between the expressive faces of the excavators and intimate close-ups of wall paintings, rooms & bodies. Very sensitively done

A 1st-century fresco of #Mercury in #Pompeii . Mercury retained many of #Hermes ’ elements in Greek myth. His connection to trade, merchants and commercial gain reflects later Roman proclivities. Caesar depicts the Gauls as worshipping Mercury in this capacity.

The Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis.
Here, Athena and Poseidon competed for control of the city of Athens. A hole in the temple roof marks the place where Poseidon's trident came down from the sky. Athena's olive tree was judged the winner.
