Tchaikovsky - d otd 1893 - on the importance of music. So true... "Only music clarifies, reconciles, and consoles. But it is not a straw just barely clutched at. It is a faithful friend, protector, and comforter." "Truly there would be reason to go mad were it not for music."

The Welsh National Opera orchestra needs your help! Keep the WNO as a full-time company, protect jobs and secure the company’s future. Write to your MP or MS and ask them to help protect one of the jewels in the Welsh culture crown. themu.org/WNOBalch

Belshazzar’s Feast is big, brassy, and utterly outrageous, but did you know the brass is performed offstage? Cameron McGregor, one of our Librarians at Liverpool Philharmonic, is here to explain more ahead of tonight’s concert with Sir Bryn Terfel. 🎟️ zurl.co/T6R8

Saturday’s concert saw the Orchestra perform Belshazzar’s Feast under the baton of @AdamHickox1 with bass-baritone from Sir Bryn T Jones . Mendelssohn's gorgeous Violin Concerto was performed by international violin sensation, Ning Feng. 📸 Gareth Jones

And by “large-scale” I should clarify that what I actually mean is normal scale for opera. Welsh National Opera will be incapable of even mounting standard operatic fare with the required forces. #Opera as an art-form in the UK is being entirely abandoned by our politicians. #SaveWNO

And this despite a real terms cut of nearly 40% since 2017. If you believe in the cultural sector Jack Sargeant MS, why have you turned your back on Welsh National Opera who need emergency funding urgently - in addition to what ACW might supply? Very poor you won’t engage. #SaveWNO

Sean Rafferty leaving Radio 3 today. Another unnecessary change by a new controller who likes to pointlessly tinker. The same man who put Record Review into a graveyard Saturday-afternoon slot and promotes 'relaxing' ambient muzak and appalling cod-symphonic video game 'music'

“One morning we’ll wake up &it’s gone.” Impassioned, erudite speech from Lord Murphy opening the debate on #Opera in House of Lords. I was moved 2hear 1 after another parliamentarian speak up, many citing the information I’d sent them. They get it. Why won’t our govts? #SaveWNO

‘…the wildly misleading assumption that opera is an elitist, exclusive art form, a view fuelled by Arts Council England…the shock-horror revelation that the most popular operas in the repertory are more than 100 years old.’ Top article from Nicholas Kenyon.

Today is our birthday! On 10 January 1840 the Liverpool Philharmonic Society was officially established and by 1843 it was hosting concerts at Collegiate Institute on Shaw Street, Everton. In 1849 we found our permanent home on Hope Street #LiverpoolHistory Angies Liverpool

“Arts Council England under Serota &Henley has demolished English National Opera &destabilised Welsh National Opera, defunded Glyndebourne Touring and devastated orchestral provision in the east of England. No other art form has suffered such extensive prejudice.” #SaveWNO Norman Lebrecht slippedisc.com/2025/03/arts-c…

This is the reality. ⬇️ #Opera is dying a death in #Wales & if Welsh National Opera isn’t prepared to fight for its company members, I will. GOV.UK & Welsh Government need to act to #SaveWNO before it’s 2 late & stop the ongoing job cuts. Please share and sign in the link below.
