Raghu Rai was an exceptionally gifted photographer. Not only could he capture the mood of the moment, but he had the uncanny ability to find that picture worth the thousand words journalists would struggle to write. He covered events, of course; but his greatness lay elsewhere. +

More than a decade ago, in an interview with Indian photojournalists, I asked Raghu Rai which two images from his vast and brilliant repertoire he considered iconic, both personally and for the nation. Hear his answer and see the images (around 12 min): ndtv.com/video/india-ma…

I feel emotional on Raghu Rai's passing. Years ago I found, in a used book from dadar, some photos printed on cheap paper. It was like finding a method to life. A camera does teach you, but you've got to be close enough like he said. His Bhopal Gas Tragedy photos were singular.

A piece I wrote in 2013, about Raghu Rai's lost (and discovered) photographs of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh -- in The Caravan. caravanmagazine.in/reviews-and-es…

Raghu Rai (1942-2026) | A thousand photographs and a million words. "“I meet my god through my camera,” he once said. The endless striving is over. The camera can rest. The photographs will speak on." Beautiful tribute by Ziya Us Salam The Hindu thehindu.com/entertainment/…

Seeing Rai’s coverage of the genocide in, and liberation of, Bangladesh radically changed my sense of what South Asian history “looked like”. An extraordinary life which brought so many other lives into the light.

This picture that Raghu Rai took of Arundhati Roy somewhere in Delhi is a masterpiece that captures what I would call “the male gaze”.
