2/ Wheat is an ancient crop which provides over a quarter of our food. Yet, modern day wheat which we use for our bread and biscuits, makes use of less than half of the wheat diversity available in these pre-war wheats.

3/ By studying this ancient collection across many growing environments, the scientists have uncovered new traits which could improve modern wheat by reducing its carbon footprint and improving its resistance to pests and pathogens.

4/ The study also developed tools which are already being used to improve modern crops with these novel traits. This ground-breaking study will help secure future harvests and sustainably feed a growing global population.

This week I joined the Rosalind Franklin Women In Wheat annual workshop. I was inspired by Jess Wade's talk about academia's hidden curriculum, and enjoyed learning about fellowships and elevator pitches. Yet my highlight was meeting other early career scientists studying wheat!
