The Division had a hugely successful physical agility test turnout on Saturday in preparation of the 2026 RI Sheriffs Academy. Over 100 candidates turned out to participate in the agility test with a 60% success rate. Candidates will move on to the written exam phase.

The #RISheriffs had the honor of providing security and safety over the past two weekends for the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals. The Division worked alongside their Federal, State and Local law enforcement partners to ensure a safe environment for all who attended.

#RISheriffs are pleased to welcome 2 new Deputies from our lateral transfer hiring initiative. Dep. Jason Farias retired from Warwick PD after 20 years of service & Dep. Ehren Mallams from the Lane County Sheriff's Office in Eugene, OR where he was a Deputy Sheriff for 7.5 years.

Recently, Lt. DeLima & Deputy Kingston volunteered their time at the Pilgrim High School Class of '26 ‘Touch a Truck Fundraiser.’ It was a great day showcasing the inner workings of our prisoner transport bus to students & young children to help support their fundraising efforts

Chief Paul Martellini is honored to announce that the RI Sheriffs were the recipients of the 2025 Neil J. Houston, Jr. Memorial Award from the Justice Assistance Organization, which has become recognized as the most prestigious award in the RI criminal justice system.

Last night, we began our '26 Academy Class with a successful orientation night. 342 applicants & over 6 months of testing, we will train the TOP 14 Deputy Sheriff recruits. The '26 Academy will begin on 2/16 where these recruits will endure an intensive 8-week training program.

Today Chief Paul Martellini swore in new Major Michael Tavarozzi. He comes to the RI Sheriffs with decades of experience and a proven record of accomplishments. Major Tavarozzi had an over 20-year career with the North Providence Police Department retiring at the rank of Captain.
