Free speech and a free press must be protected.

Weā€™re backing a new law that prevents the corrupt rich from gagging journalists and avoiding scrutiny through SLAPPs.

What are SLAPPs? ā¬‡ļø

ā€œPlant trees youā€™ll never see.ā€

A favoured phrase of Martin. It spoke to his commitment to pass on knowledge, help those earlier in their careers, steer the industry he loved using his experience and wisdom.

He leaves behind a forest.

We will miss him terribly.

Beyond Ian Lavenderā€™s famous role, heā€™s also the only person to have played a Government Economic Service (GES) govt economist in a film or TV drama. A single appearance in ā€˜Yes Ministerā€™. Officials were so appalled that an economist had spoken to a minister that he never appeared again. How times change!

Thinking on this of RenĆ©e Goldman-Lewin, of 18 rue d'Aubervilliers, Paris 19eme. Rounded up and imprisoned in the Velodrome dā€™Hiver, RenĆ©e was separated from her mother, and was deported alone, on 22 August 1942 to a concentration camp. She was 4 years old.

RIP. Bob Solow an absolute giant in Economics, has passed away at age 99. Tremendously influential in the profession and one of the key founders of the MIT Economics department as we live it today. Will be sorely missed.

Rest in peace, Benjamin Zephaniah. His music & poetry in the 1980s opened my eyes to the racism & injustice faced by our fellow citizens. Seeing his transition from radical outsider to Britainā€™s national treasure was a delight. Because fundamentally, it wasnā€™t him that changed.
