Important and insightful thread from Duncan Austin on why the dominant #greengrowth narrative is flawed and dangerous. 👇
Is a "new" New Deal possible? Martin Wolf hopes so, but I'm not convinced. As Gary Gerstle argues, the fall of communism ‘removed what remained in America of the imperative for class compromise.’ Without the threat of revolution, reform is a pipe dream. medium.com/volans/realist…
In his new book, Martin Wolf accuses #degrowth advocates like Jason Hickel of ‘unrealistic utopianism’. I argue that Wolf's vision of “de-emissioned growth" and a “new” New Deal is more deserving of the label. It is a fantasy dressed up as pragmatism. medium.com/volans/realist…
Was the The Telegraph always this bad? I've never been a regular reader of it, but my impression used to be that it was a respectable right-wing newspaper. Now it seems to be a spreader of misinformation and stupid conspiracy theories.
Govts have zero track record of following through on promises made as part of the UN Biodiversity process. How can we make sure this time is different? It will take a herculean effort from civil society and biz to hold govts to account for implementing subsidies reform.
So let me get this straight... The Economist thinks green growth is perfectly viable and desirable in rich countries, but impossible in poorer countries: economist.com/leaders/2023/0… Either way, their message is: go for growth and pray for the best.
