Just arrived in Malawi with Menghestab Haile and Dr. Patrice TALLA.
We are looking forward to engaging with the UN team led by Rebecca (Becky) Adda-Dontoh and working closely with Malawi Government🇲🇼 to help communities impacted by a historic El Niño drought.
As #ElNiño -induced floods worsen in #Kenya , I'm releasing $3M from CERF - The UN's emergency fund to provide aid for 150K affected people.
With Tropical Cyclone Hidaya threatening further heavy rains along the coast, we are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond promptly.
Better forecasting and early warnings systems + anticipatory approaches = reduced impact of climate disasters.

Martin Griffiths has allocated $13.5 million from CERF - The UN's emergency fund to immediately support people in Angola, Malawi, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

Good news.
Martin Griffiths is releasing an extra $13.5 million from CERF - The UN's emergency fund to strengthen the response to El Niño, bringing the total allocations to over $60 million globally.
This will help Governments & communities in Southern Africa address the worst impacts of the drought.
Thanks to UN GA President & UN ECOSOC President for bringing us together to improve our response to El Niño.
From Peru to Zambia, Governments and communities are taking the lead in responding to this climate disaster. We need to learn from them and step up in solidarity.
It is now the second time Kenya is affected by floods in less than a year.
We need emergency assistance like the one provided by Kenya Red Cross in support of Government efforts.
But we also need longer term solutions to the climate crisis.
