The search continues in Kenya after deadly flash floods in Mai Mahiu

It is now the second time Kenya is affected by floods in less than a year.

We need emergency assistance like the one provided by Kenya Red Cross in support of Government efforts.

But we also need longer term solutions to the climate crisis.

We have set up a tracing desk at Ngeya Girls Secondary School in Mai Mahiu, Naivasha.

So far, 49 people have been reported as missing at our desk.

Additionally, we are providing psychosocial support services to the affected families, alongside a multi-agency team.

Update: 109 people rescued and rushed to various hospitals within Naivasha.

We continue to be actively engaged in search and rescue/retrieval efforts.

Early this morning, we continued with search and rescue/retrieval operations and set up three tracing desks near Total Petrol Station in Madogo, another near Garissa Bridge and Garissa Mortuary.

The floodwaters are reported to have originated from a nearby river that broke its banks.

Update: 23 people have been rescued and are currently receiving care at Madogo Hospital, while others are still missing.

A boat carrying a large number of people has capsized at Kona Punda while heading to Mororo.

Our teams from Garissa and Tana River County are currently responding to the situation.

To enhance our ongoing search and rescue operations amid the ongoing flooding, we have deployed new rescue boats, particularly in high-risk flood areas.

Kenya is facing a worsening flood crisis due to the combined effects of El Niño and the ongoing March-May 2024 long rains.
