During a visit to Kakuma Refugee Settlement in northern Kenya, Barham Salih, United Nations High Commissioner for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, highlighted Kenya’s role as a model for refugee protection and stressed the need for greater international solidarity to support durable solutions.

Violence in Aleppo has displaced thousands since last week. Civilians are caught in crossfire, hospitals and homes have been hit. A fragile ceasefire offers hope, but needs remain urgent. UNHCR is on the ground, delivering life-saving aid. Support is urgently needed.

In Adre, at the Chadian border, I met Sudanese refugees who just fled the horrors of war at home. UNHCR is playing a crucial role here, ensuring people find safety and protection, shelter and other vital assistance. But it is far from enough, given the scale of this calamity.

From fleeing to rebuilding. High Commissioner Barham Salih's first official visit included a stop in Farchana, Chad. There he saw hope. There, Sudanese refugees aren't just finding safety, they're finding opportunity and dignity.

Leaving Chad, I am deeply grateful to UNHCR teams doing lifesaving work every day. I also carry profound appreciation for the communities hosting Sudanese refugees. Their solidarity is extraordinary. But not infinite. The world must step up its support for the people here.
