Change is happening in Reston. New transit hubs have generated large-scale development, driving population increases and job growth in Reston. We want to work with community members to create a place that will provide permanent, protected public space and benefit all of Reston.

The Reston National Neighborhood Study Group is committed to creating new permanent open space where it does not now exist, maintaining that any new development is adjacent to transit or existing infrastructure, and ensuring that any changes will benefit the entire neighborhood.

Years of deferred investment has challenged the environment and infrastructure in neighborhoods surrounding Reston National Golf Course. Investing in these neighborhoods and creating connected communities will add value for every stakeholder.

The Reston National Golf Course is private property; neighbors can’t walk on the land, except for limited trails that cross it. We want to look at this property in a new light and envision ways that it can become a public space that improves our community and our environment.

Early findings from our studies show that open space and parks south of Sunrise Valley Drive are smaller than those north. We want to bring open space to this neighborhood and live up to Bob Simon’s vision.

On average, 160 people per day use the golf course. We envision that this property could be a place that can provide community-oriented public space for golfers and non-golfers; a space where there is something for everyone in Reston, regardless of age, income, or lifestyle.

As a privately owned property, RNGC only serves 24 Restonians per day on average - golfers who pay to play. Is this serving the Reston community as a whole? We have a vision for this 168-acre property that could truly become a protected, permanent community-friendly open space.

Restoring the natural environment to parts of the RNGC property would improve the lifestyle for those in the surrounding neighborhoods, protect the natural environment in Reston, increase connectivity, improve access to trails and amenities, and maintain Bob Simon’s vision.
