Discovered by serendipity from F-PDO-treated BY-2 cells, the intense visible emission is due to an ESIPT-induced fluorescence generated from F-PDO photoreduction & thiol alkylation. F-PDO thus acts as a novel(pro)-fluorescent probe for monitoring redox processes in living cells.
