Here's the Washington Post's front page on January 7, 2021. Four years later, the paper, famous for its tagline "Democracy Dies in Darkness," doesn't want to take a stand on who is fit to be president.

If Trump's little "surprise" with Mike Johnson involves throwing the election into the House, that's only possible if Johnson is still Speaker on Jan 6. New Congress is sworn in Jan. 3. If Dems win the House, Johnson won't have that power. House races are critically important.

On CNN SOTU, Sen. John Fetterman pushes back on GOP transgender ads blanketing the state. "It doesn't make you a man to pick on trans or gay kids. It just makes you an asshole."

Everyone is surprised by the Iowa poll, but remember - Obama won Iowa. Twice. Iowa isn't Alabama. Plus there's the Walz factor. And Dobbs. Not at all crazy that Harris could win. I can see it.

Trying to take the long view. In 1984 with Reagan the Republicans won 49 states. Eight years later the Democrats won the White House with Bill Clinton. Things go in cycles. Of course, that assumes we will still be allowed to have elections.

Democrats assumed that having abortion protection measures on the ballot (most of which passed) would boost the anti-Trump vote. It may have done the opposite - gave voters permission to vote for Trump by seeing they could still protect abortion rights.

Regs say he must file a confidential report with the AG when his work is done. One option would be to prepare a report and give it to Garland before Jan 20. Garland could then make it public. At least that would document the facts for history.

Clearly a sitting president can’t be prosecuted. But that doesn’t mean this DOJ need dismiss the Trump cases rather than just putting them on hold. Of course, the Trump DOJ would dismiss the cases. But don’t do it for them.

If Smith was planning on indicting Trump's co-conspirators in DC at any point, he should go ahead and do it now. Get it on the record that the grand jury believed they should be indicted and make Trump order dismissal of the case and/or pardon them all.

My latest on Sidebars: Trump will now avoid any accountability for his past criminal acts, has immunity to commit new crimes in office, and is free to use the justice system to punish enemies and reward supporters. The rule of law lost on Tuesday. sidebarsblog.com/p/the-rule-of-…

I'm not sure we have adequately focused on how dangerous it will be to have a prez Trump who: 1) Knows he has criminal immunity for acts that can be characterized as "official" (such as ordering the military to act); and 2) Knows he has a Congress that will never impeach him.

My latest on Sidebars: with Trump winning re-election the criminal cases against him will be dropped, he can commit new crimes with immunity, and he can use the justice system to punish his enemies. The rule of law was on the ballot - and it lost. sidebarsblog.com/p/the-rule-of-…

"Just as Trump’s criminal cases did not prevent his reelection, the election should not prevent the regular criminal process in New York from concluding," Randall Eliason writes. The sentencing in Trump's New York case must go on: theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
