After his knee injury last fall, Reuben has been working hard to get back into playing shape. It showed this morning during his OF work out. Proud of you son! Derek Watson

Tis the season for youth baseball tryouts... Teams can sell "vision" all day about being in it for the right reasons. (development, fun, etc.) But if their "culture" speaks otherwise, no amount of "vision selling" will change that. Culture eats vision for breakfast.

Parents: Yelling at the other team from behind the fence doesn't make your team any better. It won’t make your team improve mechanics, gain confidence or play better defense. This type of "mental warfare" at a youth game has a term: BULLYING. #letthekidsplay

I see athletes move on to the "next thing" because the thing they were doing "didn't work". But did they really give it time, energy and consistency?

Talent is good. But talent alone isn't good enough. Give me an athlete who has the "want to" over the athlete who relies on talent alone.

Two teams have now won the World Series in Arlington since 2010. Neither are the Texas Rangers. #CongratsDodgers #WorldSeries #WS2020

It's important to combine your DESIRE with your VALUES. Values are things that you have to do in order to achieve your desire. Do you DESIRE to be a good pitcher? Then you must VALUE bullpen sessions. Bottom line: Desire is the first step towards being a mentally strong athlete

Self-Discipline is the "ability to pursue a desire despite temptations to abandon it." Athletes: there comes a point where if you want to separate yourself from the rest of the pack, it’s going to take self-discipline do what others won't to be successful.

Younger kids often give into fear, especially as they are just beginning to develop self-confidence. If you have kids who play baseball, I encourage you to HAVE THEM watch this short video from Owen about mental toughness! youtu.be/L5kv4H7cQS0

A team becomes a team when it has a common purpose with respect for everyone's role. Otherwise it is simply a group of people.
