Our colleague Ricardo Borrego presented the first results of daily growth of southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) larvae after 37 years! He also showed a comparative growth study between T.maccoyii and skipjack tuna (k.pelamis) larvae at the #ISMS congress! IEO Málaga 🌊⛴️🐟🌡️🔬

Miguel Ángel presented the his Master's Thesis "Larval Trophic Ecology of the Southern Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) and Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the Eastern Indian Ocean," at the National Congress of Biosciences Students held in Granada. Congratulations!

INDITUN is in Canada!! Raúl Laiz and José María Quintanilla, researchers at IEO Málaga 🌊⛴️🐟🌡️🔬, traveled to Canada to present some of the results of the project at the 13th International Conference on the Application of Stable Isotope Techniques in Ecological Studies.

El atún rojo del sur Thunnus maccoyii🐟 tiene una única zona de puesta conocida en el mundo: al noreste del océano Índico, entre Java y Australia. Curiosamente, se trata de una zona oligotrófica, es decir, con pocos nutrientes. ¿Cómo sobreviven las larvas en este ambiente?🤔

En estas zonas hay poco plancton, lo que favorece a las larvas de atún al haber menos predadores. Pero podrían no encontrar suficiente alimento. En este contexto, el nitrógeno fijado por cianobacterias es la principal entrada de este elemento esencial en la cadena trófica.

Esta relación entre fijación de N y ecología trófica larvaria del atún rojo del sur en el Océano Índico es lo que está estudiando nuestro compañero Raul Laiz Carrion en el Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, gracias a las ayudas Salvador de Madariaga-Fulbright. ¡Enhorabuena!
