#ŚląskaSwifts update: a big influx this weekend; don’t think it’s bangers as they’re all flying around pairing up. Meanwhile we have a definite pair in box 9, who are busy bringing in nest material 😻

A wonderful experience at the Cockshut wetlands, #Lewes, this afternoon - 40+ #Swifts screaming over the water and around our heads, accompanied by about 12 House Martins.

We saw larger groups of up to 11 #Swifts screaming around the junction of Western Road, #Lewes, this evening. One entered nest 2 at number 98 and the video shows two Swifts following it - one struggled almost completely inside then fell away and flew off, zooming right past us.

Welcome to Round 1 of Nature or No Nature! Keir Starmer, you were elected on a promise to meet legally binding nature targets. Now, funding for nature, and laws protecting species and habitats, are at risk. So, for a chance to win back public trust, your first question:

Rain tonight, but we saw entries to 2 of the boxes in De Montfort Road, 2 #Swifts entered the RH box at the rear Western Road, and one Swift banged at the LH box. Surveyors have now identified ten nest entrances at the top of St. Swithun's Terrace, total now 68 nests in #Lewes.

At St. Anne's Church we saw one #Swift fly halfway into nest 6 then reverse out again and 5 minutes later two Swifts entered the nest together. Both Swifts returned to nests 1 and 2 in Western Road, #Lewes. The photograph shows the Swifts at King Henry's Road having a snooze.

For the first time since 2021, no Tawny Owl chicks were found in 25 nest boxes monitored by Sussex Barn Owl Group.☹️🦉 A worrying sign, possibly tied to prey shortages. This is being investigated with other groups. Full article here; tinyurl.com/44pakkhk

At 8.55, when we were standing right underneath the colony in upper Western Road, #Lewes, to show some people where the #Swifts were nesting, one astonished us by flying over our heads and into nest 3. Its partner didn't return until 9.30 p.m.

We spent most of the evening at St. Anne's Church, but we onlysaw one #Swift enter and another exit at nest 1 above the main door. Kevin recorded another active nest at the rear of the High Street, bringing our total to 70 nests in #Lewes.

Sometimes I’m asked ‘why do you care?’ ‘Swifts are one of the oldest species on earth. They spend more time airborne than any other bird yet when they come home they come home to us. They’re on the brink. They just need a brick with a hole in it.’

Some wonderful sights tonight at St. Anne's Church with screaming fly-pasts, some banging by prospecting #Swifts and a new nest 13. New third nest in King Henry's Road too. That makes 72 nests in #Lewes!
