3/6 ➡️ 455,950 UKB participants ➡️ 5,094 IBD matched to 20,376 non-IBD controls ➡️ Median follow-up of 12.4 years ➡️ IBD had higher incident rate of AAE (924.1 vs 730.9 per 100,000 person-years, p<0.001) ➡️ IBD higher risk of all AAEs (aHR, 1.19; CI, 1.08-1.31; P<0.001)

4/6 ➡️We also assessed risk of premature AAEs (age <55 males and <65 females) ➡️3,129 with IBD matched to 12,516 controls without IBD ➡️IBD had higher incidence rate (406.8 vs 326.1 per 100,000 PY) & risk of composite premature AAEs ( IRR 1.41; 95% CI, 1.14 –1.75, p = 0.001)

5/6 ➡️ Adjusted for traditional risk factors, independent, quantifiable association shown between inflammation & disease severity with AAE ➡️hs-CRP levels (highest vs lowest quartile) & AAE risk, aHR, 1.54; CI, 1.09–2.17 ➡️Disease severity & AAE risk: aHR, 5.40; CI, 4.03–7.22

6/6 Implications for patient care ➡️ Association between a quantifiable marker of inflammation & disease severity with risk of AAE, highlights AAE (incl. premature AAE) as important EIM of #IBD even in younger pts & importance of effective inflammation control to reduce this EIM
