I've got good intel that 'feisty', 'fizzle', 'partridge', 'petard', and 'pumpernickel' all have fart-related etymologies.

I think it's cute that shell functions are defined with

my_func () {
…
}

but it's forbidden to put anything in the parentheses, nor do you call functions with parentheses. You could ungenerously call it cargo-culting, but I think it's more of a little C skeuomorphism.
