Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼 Recently saw Amartya Sen speak at Amherst College. He said, "I don't know what neoliberalism means. All I know is that when one person calls another neoliberal the first person doesn't like the second."

I'm happy to announce that I am joining the economics department of NovaSBE for a 4-year post-doc position. Here is a picture of me and Sai on our first day! Looking forward to this new chapter :)

Anxiety manifests in the most unexpected ways. Tell me why I’ve been carrying around anxious feelings about having to throw the first pitch at a baseball game FOR YEARS

As a scientist, every decision you make should follow from your philosophy of science. If and why you would collect data. How you analyze it. How you write a paper. If you can not justify your actions, you are just imitating others, which might be fine, but it might not be fine.

CRITICAL new findings on genAI impact in entrepreneurship. Abstract says it all: business that were already doing well get a 20% boost. Businesses that were struggling saw a 10% *decrement*. That's right. It hurt them. And we know a bit about why. More research needed.

If anyone is looking for the most thoughtful present, my Mum bought me a year in books for Christmas and it’s amazing ❤️📚 (even better, some were second hand from people who mean a lot to me)

To wrap up 2023 I got a banging haircut and landed myself in the ER (different incidents). 2024 is really bout to be a mixed bag

I went all 2023 without having a drop of alcohol, and masochist that I am, I also quit caffeine. Of course, this isn't the first time I quit. I quit alcohol for 4 years rather abruptly--tacchino freddo--when I was in Italy. Some reflections on being free from a substance:

It’s #worldcancerday today and almost 5 years since I was told I had advanced stage inoperable cancer that they thought world not be cured. I was 36 years old. Last night I went out with a lovely friend and laughed, ate good food and acknowledged my good fortune to be alive.

From what we know about meta-prompting, it seems as though the model has self-corrected over several iterations to maximize user preferences. Does this mean as users we need to be mindful of how we provide feedback so as not to promote extreme behaviors? openai.com/index/sycophan…
