We recently responded to a heartbreaking #dolphin entanglement. Very grateful for our local community, SeaWorld, and NOAA for their assistance. You can help tackle this growing problem by #recycling fishing line and reporting entangled dolphins to MyFWC: 1-888-404-FWCC.

All I want for Christmas is to see happy healthy right whales in FL!! I may or may not be sitting on Flagler beach tomorrow morning with my binos… 👀🐳🎄

🐋 The good news? 13 new North Atlantic right whale calves have been spotted since the end of November! 😔 The bad news? The birthrate doesn't make up for the number of whales that die each year. Check out New England Aquarium's photo album: go.whoi.edu/NARW-Update 📸 via NOAA permit 26919

🤮🥲🤮🥲 Another one dead, appears to be another entanglement in commercial fishing gear. Entanglement in lobster and crab traps in the Northeast USA and Canada is the number one cause of death for whales. Vessel strikes are a close second. A necropsy will be performed so the

UPDATE: The necropsy of North Atlantic right whale #5120 was completed on February 1, 2024. From the necropsy, experts confirmed a chronic entanglement, with rope deeply embedded in the tail, and thin body condition. See the full update: bit.ly/3HHN5Om

We had a special visitor today in Melbourne Beach, Feb 3, 2024. Did you know Brevard County is part of the calving grounds for the North Atlantic right whale species? This is a one-year-old female North Atlantic right whale, born during the 2023 calving season and the first

Based on our analysis of the gear, including the purple markings on the rope recovered from North Atlantic right whale #5120, we have concluded that the rope is consistent with the rope used in Maine state water trap/pot buoy lines. Full update: bit.ly/42IMKVE

Only 2 weeks ago I was as lucky enough to watch this whale playing in the surf from Melbourne Beach. This is yet another detrimental loss for this species. I am heartbroken and extremely angry 💔

This sobering gif (the tiny red dot is a whale, blue streaks are vessels) is part of a fresh look at delays in two critical steps to cut the horrid losses of North Atlantic right whales - slowing boats down and shifting to ropeless lobster gear. Benji Jones at Vox:

We had a great time at the Melbourne Police Kid’s Fishing Clinic, sharing how to protect Indian River Lagoon dolphins – especially following an increase in entanglements in 2023. Recycling fishing line & reeling in gear when dolphins are near can decrease risk of entanglement!

In January, I followed the tragic story of a right whale called 5120, who washed up dead on Martha's Vineyard. Researchers ultimately blamed her death on a rope that cut deeply into her tail. It came from Maine lobster fishing gear. And that might have been the end of the story.

But online, across this platform and others, hundreds if not thousands of commenters began claiming offshore wind killed 5120. The storm of misinformation led me down a road untangling the complicated truths -- and untruths -- about offshore wind and right whales.
