🧵 On UK sociology: some 67 departments were submitted to RAE1992. That had fallen to 37 in 2021, up from 29 in REF 2014. Fees were introduced in 1998 and with that exposure to (some) market discipline, at least in relation to other subjects and, to a lesser extent, other unis.

It's difficult to put into words how I, and indeed everyone who came across or worked with Craig, will feel on hearing such devastating news. He was without hesitation one of the most wonderfully talented, emotionally understanding, calm, balanced and outrageously funny people

This is incredibly alarming. There could be many factors but something the new Medr needs to investigate urgently. The last major study of higher education choice and decision making in Wales was in 2005 for the first Rees Review on student support. Time to revisit this?

Change in proportion of people getting A/A*s from 2023 to 2024 by region of England, Wales and NI. Despite post-COVID adjustments for everyone, and the positive legacy of AS results for people in Wales from last year, how can this be regarded as ‘success’ for Welsh learners?

Genuinely, where is the equivalent of Research England in Wales? Is Wales getting its fair share? Is it simply the economies of scale that make the allocation of research funding in England go further? Or are there issues with the management of the equiv funding for Wales?

There's been lots of recent interest in rising school exclusions, but number of pupils 'missing' from education is far more significant. Interesting patterns in the latest ADR Wales report by Year group and geography of Wales. Perhaps something Comisiynydd Plant | Children's Commissioner Wales should be aware of

This is a very interesting strategy, acknowledging that smartphone use amongst children is as much a social decision as it is an individual decision. Also a good example of how place-based initiatives can be important for solutions to ‘wicked’ problems bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

A brilliant report & thread by Rhys Williams﮷. My only disagreement is around fault. A systemic issue means we’re all at fault. Until we realise that we will not change anything (like anti-racism for example). But perhaps the point is not to point fingers but to enact change
