Everyone sensible in IT has been saying for years that if you buy COTS (commercial off-the-shelf software packages) you shouldn’t customize it - it’s wildly expensive and you end up with something hard to maintain and almost impossible to upgrade.

I’m constantly surprised when start-up founders ask me at what point should they hire their first designer. My answer is usually some variation of, “if you were designing your own house, when would you hire an architect”?

“Why are designers designing stuff that destroys the environment in its making?” “Designers have no power.” “Why aren't we in a position of authority?” Impactful change happens through educating users, not carving out niches in hierarchies. Users are the final decision-makers.

Guess what? Bringing the money was the only thing that really mattered. I have seen so many tech startups with inadequate tech and inexperienced founders who get funded because money buys an experienced team. What matters is the idea not the tech.
