In honor of celebrating #JuneteenthDay on June 19th, the City of San Diego raised the Juneteenth flag at City Hall. Juneteenth is American history. This holiday recognizes the day Black enslaved people were notified of their freedom in Galveston, Texas, separate from July 4th.

For more than 50 years, the Cooper Family Foundation has brought a celebration of Juneteenth to the San Diego community. My office was proud to present the #JuneteenthDay proclamation on behalf of the city of San Diego to our community’s beloved Mama Cooper.

Juneteenth is a time to commemorate the anniversary of the delayed news of freedom reaching the enslaved Black folks in Galveston, Texas. Today, we remember that struggle for freedom as we reflect on how far we’ve come as a country—and on the work that remains undone.
