Been my most productive week of running to date. Happy with the progress I've been making in the last few months. Still have to take care and make sure my body doesn't fall of a cliff and have to sustain this in a steady manner.

UEFAs European Financial Landscape report was released today. And I thought I'd use that occasion to talk about a topic that has annoyed me for a while. And that is to do with the discrepancy between media-reported wages and the wages in the clubs accounts.

Websites like Capology and other equivalents are often used in discussions about the wages of specific players. But those figures often differ significantly from what Clubs report to UEFA.

One reason why wages differ significantly is that they include all non-playing staff. But this does not explain difference enough. UEFA releases the aggregated non-playing staff wage cost per league each season as well as the aggregated player cost.

This information lets us calculate a league-specific ratio to estimate how much each club in each league spends on its squad. In the spreadsheet below, one can see each league's specific ratio.

With that ratio, we can estimate each club's total Squads expenditure fairly accurately, as shown in the table and graph below. PSG, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, and Barcelona all have differences of well over €100m

These estimates are far more accurate than anything Capology or other websites tell you. The differences in estimates based on the league specific ratios vs. Capology are crazy.

With the figures, we won't get the specific wages of players, but no one can give you those unless they have seen the contract, or the media-reported figures for the whole squad closely match the club account figures. In most cases, they don't.

I have no idea what benefit the clubs have in briefing these false figures. Because the agents of players they are trying to sign or renew are clearly aware of the actual figures. But it genuinely annoys me that journalists seemingly have no interest in finding out.

Players who cost a lot of money earn a lot of money. There is no magic formula where one club convinces established players to take 30-40% less than what they would make at a different, similar-sized club.

Well played, Sven Ulreich. He hasn’t made a competitive appearance for almost 18 months, has been through private hell during that time, and was excellent today. What a pro.

The game today was actually a really nice example of what type of role a third keeper should have for an elite side. Really happy for him, he deserves a ton of love and praise considering the pain he's gone through.
