On this day in 1953, The Right Honourable Vincent Massey is sworn in as the first Canadian-born Governor General of Canada on the advice of PM Louis St. Laurent. His approval by George VI weeks earlier was one of his last acts as the King of England.

Today in 1818, George Brown was born in Scotland. A Father of Confederation, he was also a founder of the Liberal Party. He sat in the Senate from 1873-1880. On Mar. 25, 1880, a former employee shot him in the leg. The leg became infected & Brown died on May 9, 1880.
