Here is a photo of #ClydeTombaugh having supper at @SHube3’s house, along with an email from @SHube3’s dad explaining the amazing story! It came to light as we are remembering that it was #OnThisDay 18 February 1930 that #CyldeTombaugh discovered #Pluto Thanks for sharing!

DART is on schedule to impact Didymos's moon, Dimorphos. Impact scheduled for 7:14pm EDT or 2314 GMT. DART's camera, DRACO, is the newer version of New Horizon's LORRI camera.

Some background. DART (double asteroid redirection test) is NASA's first planetary protection mission. Basic idea is to test to see if an impact by a spacecraft can affect the orbit of an asteroid.

The target of the DART spacecraft is the moon (Dimorphos) of asteroid Didymos. The moon is about 1/5 the size of Didymos. Dimorphos takes about 11hrs 5min to orbit Didymos and the hope is that after the impact, a change in this orbital period will result.

On Sep 11, LICIA Cube was released from the DART spacecraft. It is to document/image the impact. LICIA Cube is from the Italian space agency

The one way light time from Earth to the DART spacecraft is on the order of 35 sec at impact. (11 million kilometers/6.8 million miles). Currently at 11 million miles from Dimorphos

So honored to receive the 2022 Resnik Challenger Medal from the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). It's humbling and exciting at the same time. Thank you SWE for continuing to support and inspire women engineers. SWE
