A fresh reminder that 90% of what you read here about this escalation - including from official sources - will be wrong.

So yeah, that’s an extrajudicial execution of an unarmed man at point blank range. A blatant violation of just about every law in every book. Not that this kind of thing is new at all, Israel does this all the time. It’s just not every day we see it on camera so clearly.

North Korea has started supplying Russia with yet another weapons system — for the first time, we’re seeing North Korean 60mm mortars in use by Russian forces. This is just a part of a much larger and more troubling trend: North Korea has become a key pillar of Russia’s war

The seriousness of the situation on the frontlines was recently laid out in detail by Olexandr Solonko, a soldier currently serving in Donetsk Oblast. I strongly recommend reading the translated version closely if you’re trying to understand the situation on the ground. Thread:

An update on the war following a recent trip. As Russian offensive presume mounts, the front is not at risk of collapse, though salients have formed. More concerning is that Russian improvements in drone employment have reduced Ukraine’s advantages. Long thread. 1/

5/ This means Ukraine had to commit units from other directions. While not certain, this could increase risks elsewhere along the frontline. More importantly, such measures address the symptoms rather than the cause - they stabilize, but do not resolve the underlying problem.

Od bojovníků za demokracii na mě vyskočila tahle mapa. Bulhaři a Rumuni v temno-bloku. WTF?. Země to nejsou rozhodně dokonalé, ale v Rumunsku roste jedna z největších základen NATO. Bulharsko brzo zavede euro a více se tak integruje do EU atp. Neznáme ani naše spojence.

Working on a chapter about the 1942 Singapore campaign for an upcoming book, and I'm struck by how this historical disaster exemplifies the same strategic failures I've critiqued in contemporary European grand strategy toward Ukraine. Singapore represents the catastrophic cascade

You spend 18 months tracking sightings of an extremely rarely seen weapon, you speak to guys using the weapon, you spend hours writing an article, days producing a video and then someone just rips all the images from your posts and doesn't credit the research. Like come on.

We are in the early stages of the end of the Pax Americana, during which global supply chains were assembled that supported an unprecidented prosparity. As that peace decays, production will re-localize and become less efficient. Everyone is going to get a LOT poorer.

The Sunday Times reports citing Western military sources: Ukraine is outnumbered on most sectors and needs at least 250,000 more troops plus heavier weapons to break through. Russia can keep this pace for another year despite losing over a million since the full-scale invasion.
