COVID isn’t SARS, it isn’t influenza, it isn’t smallpox, it isn’t measles. For every analogy we might draw, there are also crucial differences. If the last year has shown anything, it’s not that helpful to put a novel virus in simple boxes when discussing possible ways forward.

Covid-19 was first confirmed in NYC on March 1, 2020. I remember going to work fearful of the virus and the coming tidal wave. I’m walking into the ER a year later, fully vaccinated. I still treat really sick Covid patients. But I don’t fear becoming one myself. Get your shot!

"Loss of life and loss of living...." 💔 On this grim anniversary, thank you to the extraordinary teams of scientists who delivered viable vaccines in under a year & the thousands of MDs, Nurses, RTs, +++ who gave everything of themselves in the face of total uncertainty. #heroes

Snapped some shots of our friendly neighborhood #BroodX cicadas this week. Newly molted from its exoskeleton, this nymph is waiting patiently for its body to harden and darken, hoping to scare off predators with its "Ray-Ban" spots. #cicadas2021 #entomology

This letter from Sarajevo is the best thing I've listened to since war started. There's so much humanity and understanding in it, so much pain and hope. Thank you, Aida Cerkez, you made me cry again after days of numbness.I hope to meet and hug you one day bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0…
