Latest figures just published: Magistrates court backlog now at 353,861 up over 5,000 on the last month. Crown Court at 59,992 a rise of over 700 on the last month.

This is a truly abysmal idea. Giving unqualified volunteers the power to imprison their fellow citizens for up to two years is not a solution to the crisis in criminal justice. The solution is to undo a decade of defunding and give the Crown Courts the resources to function.

Some defendants held on remand are given just five minutes with barristers before sentencing, it was revealed at Canterbury Crown Court. Prisons are becoming consistently late allowing lawyers access to their clients remotely, potentially damaging the quality of mitigation.
