Love this thread. Summarizes how I at times feel at work so well. Sometimes I wonder if I could push the needle further to help humanity doing something else. Being a part of a failed healthcare system in the US is truly a challenge.

Where can I get a pin that says “if you’ve never held an iPad up to a dying patient so their loved ones can have difficult end of life discussions, I don’t care what you think about Covid”? The lows of inpatient medicine just feel so much lower now and it’s heartbreaking.

This was a tough article to write. Curious to know how others feel when they are called “hero”. Comments/suggestions/feedback welcome!

Loving this project. It’s so interesting to hear stories from emergency medicine attendings in different practice environments, in various parts of the country. Looking forward to reading more!

A neurologist called to tell me about a patient she was sending. The context gave me insight, and I ended up doing an extensive workup. He was young with CP. He had normal labs and plain films, and ended up having metastatic disease. Solid relationships with consultants matter.

ER is like a pirate ship. There’s a captain, first mate, an annoying parrot, won’t stop talking, bunch of people getting drunk, we help put their clothes back on, not break things. In the end, if you’re captain or crew, you’re keeping the boat afloat. And everyone is a sailor.
