45 years of imaging spectroscopy articles show a disconnect between machine learning research and pressing science challenges. A cultural shift is needed. eos.org/opinions/reali…

Siloing doesn't cut it. Coupling machine learning and imaging spectroscopy for the geosciences requires the hard work of direct collaboration to achieve the most gains. David Ray Thompson and I discuss:

The new IPCC report is a clear call to action. Our world is changing; only "strong, rapid and sustained reductions" in GHGs will stabilize the climate.

Out this week, great work led by the awesome Erica McCormick in nature showing that woody plants across the US rely on bedrock water, particularly in my native state of CA. Super important water source, especially in increasingly drought prone areas. nature.com/articles/s4158…

Packing for launch 🧳 EMIT has been loaded into the "trunk" that will travel aboard a SpaceX cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station. The instrument will map Earth's arid dust source regions, gathering info about particle color & composition as it orbits Earth.

While a lot of new science keeps us busy inside International Space Station, important science is being conducted outside the station as well. NASA JPL payload EMIT hitched a ride on Canadian Space Agency Canadarm2 to its new home where it will study dust composition and its effects on Earth’s climate.
