This is absolutely brilliant. I particularly like Ross’ line: ‘The best data about a student is most likely to come from a (mini) whiteboard, not a (computer) dashboard’

This is gold. ‘Introducing struggle is both necessary and hazardous’; and: beware the ‘OK plateau’ of ‘comfortable competence.’

When I visited the impressive Mercia School (UK) in January I learned from Jack Jewell - their passionate Head of Maths - that they spend all of year 7 nailing numeracy with specialist teachers before tackling algebra in year 8. Seems like a recipe for success.

Brilliant to get the chance to speak to Ben Carroll today. Great to see someone doing such great things for the good of the whole sector. Really good grasp of the landscape.

If you are a UK school leader and you would prefer Bennett in this role over an unknown and a possible nonentity, I suggest you make your support well known.

A couple of many takeaways from a nourishing day of Tom Bennett OBE wisdom and insight today. ‘Nobody flourishes in chaos, apart from predators and opportunists.’ And, ‘every school should adopt whole-school norms and routines, and every teacher should put their shoulder into it.

The thing about learning is that it’s incredibly elusive and deceptive. Even when it feels like it’s happening, it often isn’t. And that’s what the science of learning offers us: some signal among the noise. Without that signal, however faint, we mistake the theatre of learning

“What I discovered was that the degree to which a school was progressive was the degree to which its standards were weak” (Nick Gibb). This is another great listen, courtesy of Anna Stokke 👇👇👇
