2023 was a terrible year for Ofsted. Shortcomings in leadership, management, processes and professionalism were all too evident. Let’s hope 2024 sees lots of new faces and a more thoughtful, effective and humble approach.

Ofsted bows to pressure and halts inspections after Ruth Perry’s suicide. At last, someone at Ofsted who listens. But why has it taken so long? We’ve just got to hope the previous incumbent doesn’t get a gong. theguardian.com/education/2024…

Post Office workers wrongly accused of stealing still awaiting payouts Post Office still has so much to do. It’s time we saw the real wrong-doers face the courts. The pace of all this needs to quicken. theguardian.com/business/2024/…

This from Rt Hon Chris Skidmore . Honest , true , bold and credible . It’s tragic that a minister with such passion for positive change is forced to demonstrate their integrity by resigning - just when we need them most . I met with him recently - I was impressed and now more so . Please

Ofsted sorry for its role in Ruth Perry's suicide - BBC News. At last. Sadly this reflects very, very badly on the former Ofsted head and leadership. We’ve just got to hope she doesn’t get a gong. But we know gongs often go to the wrong people bbc.co.uk/news/education…

Back in Egypt after 31 years. The pyramids and sphinx haven’t changed much! In stark contrast in terms of size, I loved these spoons in the Museum of Antiquities…though the Tutankhamen treasures remained the highlight and were just as astonishing second time around.

Tunis village, in the desert south west of Cairo. Stunning little place with a really lovely garden. So much bird life, too.

Not sure this has been reported in the outside world, but a few days ago Egypt devalued its currency by 30%. Traffic through the Suez Canal has plummeted with the attacks. The crisis in Gaza has scared tourists away, hence the moored up cruise boats. They desperately need income.

Saw the first House Martin (or swallow or swift for that matter) of the season at Bawdsey this morning! Spring is definitely here. Seemed a slightly early arrival. Perhaps the southerly wind helped it along the way.

‘New lease of life’: how walking cricket is giving the over-50s a taste of Bazball. I’m lucky enough to be playing the full game at 62…no, not the number of runs scored, though I did pick up a couple of wickets last night. theguardian.com/sport/article/…

Ofsted single-word school ratings to be scrapped immediately. At last. Let’s just hope the former leader of Ofsted doesn’t get an honour. She clearly didn’t deserve one. Great step forwards. theguardian.com/education/arti…

Ofsted defensive and complacent after Ruth Perry's death - review - BBC News. A damning report into ⁦Ofsted⁩. Some senior managers need to do more than reflect. How many other national institutions have a similar culture? Sadly, I know several. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I simply cannot remain on this platform. The gestures made yesterday in America, let alone everything else that happened, are too much for this retired history teacher. Time to draw a line in the sand and stand on the right side.
